Gutter Cleaning

Gutters are narrow troughs, usually made of metal or plastic, that run along the edge of a roof in order to collect and direct rainwater away from the building’s foundation.  Without gutters, rainwater runs directly off the roof and collects in the ground next to the building.  Excessive moisture next to a building’s foundation will slowly erode the foundation, causing cracks to form and risking eventual collapse.  Gutters need to be cleaned regularly, because they collect all the organic residue that falls on the roof and runs down with the water – particularly leaves and sticks.  A gutter clogged with leaves and sticks is just as bad for a building as no gutter at all.  A clogged gutter will overflow with rainwater, compromising the structural integrity of the gutter and dumping all the rainwater right next to the foundation where it can do damage.

So gutter cleaning is an important routine task of home or building maintenance.  However, gutter cleaning is a task that can be both dangerous and tedious without the right tools.  It involves setting up a ladder to reach the gutters, moving the ladder slowly around the roof’s entire perimeter in order to reach and remove all of the muck, and collecting all of the waste for easy disposal.  The moist organic matter that collects in gutters can grow both bacteria and mold (and it can also grow small plants, if the clog is substantial enough!), so it is important to do a thorough job.
